About us: Press 53 is a small independent publisher of "literary" fiction, poetry, and nonfiction. If you are not sure what we mean by literary, please visit our Catalog and read the writing samplers of some of our books. There you'll find stories and poems with strong narratives. Though we don't like categorizing literature, we must adhere to certain general categories if we are to give you any sense of what it is we are interested in publishing. We are not interested in work that can be categorically labeled as straight "genre" writing, work that can be mostly categorized as mysteries, suspense/thrillers, romance novels, horror novels, science fiction work, or westerns. We also do not publish books for children or young adults, nor do we venture into picture books, graphic novels, religious testimonials, or how-to guides.
