Wow, the new release of QuarXpress is getting great reviews and turning out to be a strong upgrade which will keep it in the Quark vs. InDesign game–evening it up and surpassing it in a place or two.

Who woulda thunkit?

It’s unlikely to lure back any Quark refugess to InDesign, but it’s an important upgrade for Quark users. Whether it keeps Quark in the game depends on the market’s response—and, more importantly, Adobe's!

Check out a quick post about it here:

I used to use Quark 5 at work and got pretty used to it.

It was nice and clean and simple.

I'm now having to learn Indesign CS because I can't afford Quark 7 — $749!.

I've only just started with InDesign and I don't like it much yet. My question is to anyone who has made the switch... Will I come to like InDesign eventually?

Here, we'll refresh an old topic.

I can't speak directly to the comparison, Steven. I'm curious what your thoughts are now that you're six months further into InDesign. I started on, and only know InDesign. And thank goodness (from what I've heard) that I didn't have to do that on the early releases. I love the optical setting for kerning. I think InDesign CS2 creates beautiful flows of text. I've been very satisfied to say the least.

It's an interesting debate. I teach Graphic Design at a community college in Ontario and we are slowly phasing out Quark. This is due to several reasons:

1. most studios and agencies are switching to InDesign anyways

2. the cost of upgrading is substantially less with CS products

3. Adobe offers better tech support than Quark

I am glad to hear the new Quark version is a big improvement. They have taken a huge leap since 5.0. Although I doubt Quark will go the way of Pagemaker, it has certainly been given a wakeup call!

It's time for Ahadada Books to get on the InDesign bandwagon, methinks. Ah, time to learn another app. Is the transition — from an end-user's perspective — difficult to InDesign from Quark? Hopefully it's pretty intuitive!

I have such a love/hate relationship with Quark!
