My apologies for my recent silence, Superside. I'll have to defer to the mighty Google, as I've never been out to Calgary. I googled around and discovered the "Calgary Readers".
Calgary Readers is expanding and seeking new members for our group. We meet every 4 weeks on the weekend.
One of the main goals of this club is to allow people who enjoy books an opportunity to meet. There is no set future reading list as we prefer to have members suggest books to read.
The following are books that we have and are currently reading. It will be updated regularly.
The Lions of Al-Rassan by Guy Gavriel Kay
Not Wanted on the Voyage by Timothy Findley
The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck
No Great Mischief by Alistair MacLeod
The Old Man and the Sea by Ernest Hemingway
The In-Between World of Vikram Lall by M.G. Vassanji
Brideshead Revisited by Evelyn Waugh
Blindness by Jose Saramago
A Fine Balance by Rohinton Mistry
Apparently, you can reach them at calgaryreaders [at] yahoo.ca.
Of course, this isn't an endorsement, just something I found online. I like their list though, with Rohinton Mistry and Timothy Findlay on it—pretty diverse selection of stuff.
One thing that I do recommend without reservation is the
Calgary Blow-Out which is, essentially, "The Calgary Literary Community - Blogged!".
Tons of great events and like-minded people. If you can, check out some of their events and I'm sure you'll find a group to hook up with, read and drink some beer.
Hope these help. Failing that, I'd be happy to start up an online book club with you, here! Let's pick a _title_.
