The Tuesday Talks series continues at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 28, with an evening of poetry readings by Maine poets, Robin Merrill, Stuart Kestenbaum and Leo Tanguay, in the Abbott Room of the Belfast Free Library on High Street.
The poetry reading completes a year of varied poetry events at the Belfast Free Library. It began with the creation of Belfast's Fab Four for the January poetry reading, continued with love poems for Valentine’s day, progressed with two poetry writing workshops, was followed by a Maine Humanities Council-sponsored poetry discussion series, “American Traditions, American Innovations,” continued with paintings and poetry for the Belfast Poetry Festival in October and ends with this reading.
Merrill has a MFA from Stonecoast and a BS from Maine Maritime Academy. The former merchant mariner abandoned seafaring to marry a deckhand and teach physical science to at-risk teens. Her most recent chapbook, "Laundry & Stories," was featured on The Writer’s Almanac.
Kestenbaum has authored two collections of poems, "Pilgrimage" (Coyote Love Press) and "House of Thanksgiving" (Deerbrook Editions). His poems and writing have appeared in numerous small press publications and magazines including, Tikkun, the Sun, the Beloit Poetry Journal, Northeast Corridor and Maine Times, as well as on Garrison Keillor’s Writer’s Almanac.
Kestenbaum has directed the Haystack Mountain School of Crafts since 1988, and has written and spoken about the arts and creativity and has served on numerous panels both in Maine and nationally.
Tanguay is a poet, teacher and musician from Lowell, Mass. He has been writing poetry since his father's death in 1975. For the last 20 years, Tanguay has lived alternately in Colorado and Maine. His work has been published in assorted literary magazines and other periodicals. Tanguay's inspiration comes from Eastern spirituality, the little things we overlook and the rhythmic sounds of nature.
The reading is free and open to the public. For more information, call, 338-3884, ext. 10.
